"Straight Out" é o retrato de nove jovens, gays e lésbicas, entre os 18 e os 28 anos, que relatam as suas experiências de sair do armário islandês. Assumindo-se como homossexuais numa comunidade pequena e homogénea, as suas histórias e memórias pintam-nos um retrato das margens da sociedade islandesa e das margens de um mundo inabitado. No entanto, as suas experiências não deixam de nos ser familiares. Assistimos aos seus relatos de como se sentem inadaptados, as suas primeiras paixões, os seus primeiros impulsos de falta de amor-próprio, relações sexuais com o sexo oposto, o descobrir do outro homossexual no mundo, a procura de ajuda, tentativas de suicídio, a bebida, o enfrentar os pais, o amor, tratamento clínico a problemas de álcool e do foro psiquiátrico, a relação com os colegas, casamento e divórcio entre homossexuais, tudo numa tentativa de aumentar a auto-estima e criar uma comunidade própria. Embora a Islândia seja dos poucos países que, em termos legais, protege por completo os homossexuais, o público em geral desconhece as dificuldades de se crescer homossexual nesta pequena comunidade.

"Straight Out" portrays nine young gay people from the age of 18 to 28 who testify to their experiences of emerging from the Icelandic closet. Realizing themselves as gay people in a small closely knitted and homogeneous society, their stories and memories paint a picture from the edge of Icelandic society and from the edge of the inhabited world. Yet their experiences are somehow familiar. We watch them recall their first feelings of not fitting in, their first crush, their first thoughts of self hate, fucking the opposite sex, finding the other gay person in the world, reaching out, suicide attempts, drinking, standing up to their parents, love, alcohol treatments, psychiatry, dealing with their peers, gay marriage and divorce, all in the attempt of finding self respect and at last creating their own community. Even though Iceland is among the few nations in the world that fully protect homosexuals by law, the public is surprisingly uninformed about the difficulties in growing up gay in this small society.
