Product description
Product description
2007 two CD set. On June 14, 2006, Rufus Wainwright took to the stage to recreate the Greatest Show of All Time in honor of the Greatest Show of All Time: Judy Garland's legendary 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall. He recreated the entire show song-for-song in the very same venue it was recorded at. Garland fanatics feared a fiasco, but the show was a triumph. His sophisticated act of homage to his hero was both a loving tribute and an arch commentary on the original, featuring classics like 'Over The Rainbow', 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' and 'Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart'. Backed by a 36-piece orchestra and arranged by Broadway's famed Stephen Oremus (Wicked, Avenue Q), Rufus's vocal talent soars over those classic melodies.

It was a bit of a surprise to say the least when US singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright announced his intention to recreate Judy Garlands famous 1961 album, Judy at Carnegie Hall. Not only was the singer to recreate the album song-for-song, but he also arranged to do so in the same venue: the prestigious and legendary Carnegie Hall. While some predicted a disaster--Garlands selection of tunes, after all, are not what youd describe as Wainwrights "bag"-the night turned out to be an unprecedented success, underlining the singers versatility and his ability to put on a genuinely engaging show. For those that couldnt/didnt make it, Live at Carnegie Hall captures the entire experience, from Wainwrights surprisingly good takes on songs like Gershwins "Do It Again" to the endearing collaborations with both Garland and Wainwright families. Backed by a 40-piece orchestra, Rufus (& co.) perform the entire songlist with aplomb, dropping in some tasteful twists and subtle sexuality to boot. Now thats entertainment! --Danny McKenna

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2019I have a couple of Rufus Wainwright Albums and also the original Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall so was interested to have a listen. It is a fantastic album. Where Judy chats, Rufus chats. He adds a bonus track Get Happy at the end what sums up the album. It is a superb album. In the album sleeve notes you can see a photo of Judy on stage with Martha and Loudon Wainwright II in the audience. I can see why he has so much affection for this project. Strongly recommend but also listen to the original Judy Garland album which was recorded in April 1961. 45 years earlier
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2008I wasn't sure about this album, from reading the reviews on here. Got it anyway and LOVE IT. Can't stop listening to it. It's touching, greatly sung, but also very funny in parts - and very uplifting! I also have to say the actual recording sound is of amazing quality. If you hate rufus wainwright, of course don't bother, but if you like his voice and are open to some entertainment, I think you may well love it too!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2010Rufus's voice doesn't suit any of these songs! In fact I don't really like any of the songs anyway! Apart from Over the Rainbow andhe murdered that!
I first started liking Rufus when I heard Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, and I would say that I am a fan but this is terrible! All the songs sound the same and his voice can't take the pace! Sorry Rufus....
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2014Love Rufus? Love Judy? You'll love this. Perfect to play at full volume and sing along (which is why it has been banned by my children on the school run ...).

5.0 out of 5 stars Et si Rufus était la réincarnation de Judy?

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy + Rufus + Geffen = Broadway
Did you hear there is a new Musical in America? Judy is alive again through the efforts, expense and talents of Rufus! With Phil Ramone as producer, on the label of our well respected David Geffen, lead by Director/Conduter Stephen Oremus with his impeccable 36 piece band what we have here is a Broadway Musical created by Judy Garland. Therefore, Judy comes to life again and can do a run on Broadway for years. It took the insight of Rufus to see that of course. The research and getting the rights for all the songs and music in the order Judi created them was, I'm sure, a pain-staking task for Rufus. Yet, with a smile, laugh and lush music Rufus takes control and is morphed into Judy with gestures, jokes and dead on accuracy. He of course does not sound like Judy...does anyone? There would be a line of fantastic Broadway Divas lined up to play this role. Judy's show would knock the socks off Broadway and put Musicals back on Broadway with class, style and her treasured songs(unlike what they call musicals now such as Young Frankenstien).
For all you 1 and 2 star raters I wish you could have seen what was really going on. It takes some insight to recognize genius and doing so one needs a clear head without cackling queens who never like anything but something or someone to tear apart. It's sad to see someone stuck in a box or bar. But they do.
If Lorna Luft thinks her mother Judy Garland was paid tribute to shouldn't we all respect her opinion. If she didn't like it we'd have had cause to worry but she again knows when a star is out shining, and it's her mom. You can see Lorna on Rufus! Does Judy Live at the London Palladium
I was fortunate enough to be able to get both the CD and DVD and then bought all Rufus' CDs. I also am lucky enough to have a perfect sound system and TV to see the up-coming Judy Broadway Musical on.Bose Lifestyle 28 Series III DVD Home Entertainment System - BlackSharp Aquos LC46D64U 46" 1080p LCD HDTV
I applaud the 5 star reviewers whom were excellent in their review of Rufus and how they saw the many angles of our proud and out Rufus. May I add how handsome Rufus looked. A yummy delight for sure. Rufus is one talented man. I feel priveleged to be his fan. Rufus, Rufus, Rufus pays praise and tribute to our Judy, Judy, Judy. This simply is what it's all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars El gran Rufus nunca defrauda
