Along with the Pet Shop Boys, Erasure long-ago cornered the market in pure synth pop. While credited as early exponents of house, techno and club culture, both duos have at their core an unashamed love of the catchy hooks and anthemic choruses of pop, but their latter day releases have featured an added component: subtly. For Erasure--considering the hands in the air exuberance of hits "Stop!", "A Little Respect" and the sequins and glitter of their Abba tribute EP "Abba-esque"--Loveboat's seductive tunes and sensitive words are almost excessively subtle. Despite the pounding beats of "Perchance To Dream", the sci-fi electronica of "Here In My Heart" and the album's title, their ninth studio album isn't about the joy of love, but the pain that goes with it and indulges in melancholic melodies and a sense of longing that takes the pair straight back to those early bitter sweet hits "Oh L'Amour", "Sometimes" and "Victim Of Love". Sequin-free and relatively sedate, Loveboat, for all its subtleties, still has its share of addictive tunes--"Aliens" and "Freedom" prove that they've lost none of their penchant for pop and can still write a catchy classic when they put their minds to it. --Dan Gennoe

This is a more sombre affair for Erasure; while some people have panned this album as Erasure's worst and rated it with one star, I like this album. Love is rage, Alien, Where in the world are the three highlights for me. Every Erasure album is different and I enjoy their diversity.

If you can get past the awful production job, this is a good collection of songs (with several very good songs). But seriously, I have never before or since had to strain to make out some the actual words being sung on an Erasure album. This is a shame because the lyrics are above average for Erasure; being reasonably poetic, deep and dealing with the darker side of love for a change. In fact if this album was remastered/re-recorded, I believe it would stand as one of Erasure's better post 80s albums. IMO, the songs themselves are far stronger than those on Tomorrow's World or Cowboy.

Alien is my favourite track. Great album. Don't know why it received such poor reviews. This album is certainly not alien to me. Not sure about the Nancy panty bottoms hullaballooooooooo boat on the front cover of the album tho.

I don't know how I missed this album when it first came out, but I am really glad Amazon was able to bring it to my attention. The album is Erasure at their best.

I don’t understand this album. It sounds like Andy Bell is singing from across the room on most of the songs. The songs themselves are pretty lacklustre too. This is the only Erasure album I don’t like.

Most people's knowledge of Erasure stops a long time ago. They wrote some great stuff in the past, but each of the modern era CDs just keeps getting better and better. Erasure, Cowboy, and now Loveboat are, for me, their best!
If you want some smooth, perfect synth-pop that's got more warmth than 50 back-to-back britney spears or back street boys recordings, pick this up. And get the others too!
