Or stick to the tried-and-tested teeny-ballad blueprint that Boyzone embraced, and eventually made their own? Wisely, Gately has chosen the latter--he hasn't the iconic charisma to carry off a fully-fledged reinvention a la George Michael, nor the natural exuberance of Robbie Williams to transcend his roots. But bland as New Beginning sometimes is, it's a subversive, and sometimes surprisingly frank document of Gately's attempts to hide his sexuality--and his lover--from an adoring public.     Nach der Auflösung der Band "Boyzone" hat sich Sänger Stephen Gately, der leider kürzlich verstorben ist, zu seiner Homosexualität geoutet und ein Soloalbum herausgebracht mit dem treffenden Namen "New Beginning". Ein sehr sensibles Album, das für seine Stimme wie gemacht gewesen ist, wahrscheinlich aber nicht die Beachtung gefunden hat, die es verdient gehabt hätte. Ich erinnere mich nicht an Chartsplatzierungen aus 2002. Wäre dieses Album aber ein Hit gewesen, wäre es jetzt sicherlich neu veröffentlicht worden. Für Fans ist diese CD natürlich ein Muss, aber auch für alle, die ein Album voller sanfter Popmelodien suchen, ist "New Beginning" vielleicht ein Tip, auch wenn es schon 8 Jahre alt ist.

    I wanted so much to love this album after listening to the great music of Boyzone, and I do! This is not Boyzone Revisited. Stephen has, indeed, launched a New Beginning. The songs are infectious, and seem to grow on you with repeated listening. The song Bright Eyes is hauntingly beautiful and so very sad. The title track pretty much explains itself. As others who have reviewed the album have pointed out, Stephen's relationship with Eloy is evident in the choice of material. The recent announcement that they are no longer together adds a certain poignancy to the album. If you are a fan of Stephen's voice, you will love this album. If you are expecting another Boyzone album (and I love their music, make no mistake), give this album a try and treat yourself to something new and delightful. I'd give it six stars if I could. (After I discovered that I had purchased the German release of the CD which only has 12 songs, I reordered this edition which contains the full 13 songs. That's how much I like Stephen's music!)
