CD: George Michael,Songs from the Last Century
Amazon.co.uk
On Songs From The Last Century, George Michael seems determined to demonstrate just how much he's matured since the carefree days of Wham!; by offering his own interpretations of some of the century's classic songs, he manages to shake off any lingering remnants of his boyband past. Michael has one of the most versatile and beautiful voices ever recorded--a voice more suited for jazz or soul than pop--a fact that his own records have often only glossed over. Much better, therefore, to have him cover songs made famous by the likes of Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Brother Can You Spare A Dime", "Where Or When" and other standards are all performed to stunning effect, lushly backed by an orchestra that's as restrained and powerful as Michael's voice. He also manages to toss some surprisingly inspired choices into the mix: on "Roxanne", he wisely realises that no one can sing like Sting and opts for a more delicate approach, while his version of "Miss Sarajevo" (from the U2/ Brian Eno collaboration Passengers) elevates this obscure track to the classic status of the other standards. --Robert Burrow

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2018I have only recently discovered this, having heard it on Prime music, and find it to be a showcase for the versatility of the late great George Michael. He has put his own delightful interpretation on each song, rather than imitate the original, It is an absolute delight.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2017I try to be unbiased with each 'new' review but George Michael could sing The Runaway Train or talk the phone book and I'd love it. We know any track is going to be sung and produced to perfection, so you can press the 'play' button, sit back and know you're going to be entertained.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2014A mature album from George Michael, nicely laid back and sung well. Normally a song is written for a particular person, which is made to suit their voice. When somebody else takes on that song sometimes it can go wrong. George Michael nailed this one all the tracks well executed with great songs such as 'Wild is the Wind', 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' and 'Brother Can You Spare A Dime'. One song I did not like originally 'I Remember You' (an old Frank Ifield song) I did not like it first time around but again a very good version on this album. Bought this second hand for pennies and an absolute bargain!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2018A Lovely mellow cd with beautifully orchestrated tracks from yesteryear. Really enjoy listening to it and singing along! The 'I remember you' track by Frank Ifield played on the harp, no less, is gorgeous. Recommend it to all that like these sort of tracks and George Micheal in particular.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 September 2018Great artist sadly missed, have collected all his works since his death, every song is a lasting reminder to a hugely talented man. I only hope he knew how much pleasure he gave & continues to give through his music legacy. Thank you for the Music George xx

5.0 out of 5 stars L’ultimo grande capolavoro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfektion kann ergreifen
