Simply Red - Stars - CD
Amazon.co.uk
Such was the omnipresence of Britain's biggest selling album in 1992 and 1993, that Stars sounds like a Greatest Hits in its own right. It's always been fashionable for critics to sneer at Simply Red's phenomenal success, but there's no denying the sumptuous clarity which pervades everything here, from the doting, devotional "For Your Babies" to the deliciously understated "Wonderland". Even clumsy forays into social commentary--"Model" and the Tory-baiting "Your Mirror"--are partially redeemed by a couple of cracking tunes. Lest we forget, Stars was Simply Red's last album as a fully functioning band. Hucknall may well have since written songs to equal "For Your Babies" and "Stars", but bereft of Fritz McIntyre's sunny keyboard sound and Heitor T.P.'s crisp, angular funk playing, he's never quite sounded so Simply Red. --Peter Paphides

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2014I have a strange relationship with this album. Having loved their debut album by the time they had got to releasing "Stars" I was feeling strongly that they had sold out to the "middle-of-the-road" (middle-aged) stereotype and were just in it for the album sales and money.
Clearly, the album had strong qualities but I just felt that they hadn't progressed in the way that many other bands who started in the same era had done (e.g. U2, TalkTalk, Simple Minds). Not fulfilled ŵhat I felt was their awesome potential.
But, having just back-filled my new hi- fi set-up with albums I had originally owned as vinyl I must confess that this album now sits very comfortably on its own time-tested merits as a classic of its genre with great songs throughout presented in startlingly-good recording quality.
Just does exactly what it ever alluded to on its "tin" and never presumed to be anything than the perfect proponent of this style of music that it undoubtedly is.
Thousands will be enjoying this music long after I am dead and gone, so who am I to argue?
If you can't beat 'em join 'em!........and I am very happy to do so !
Buy and enjoy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2022When I was young it was difficult for me to hear Simply red!But now who I’m (very) older I’m saying to myself what I have missed all those years… But better late than never we’re saying here in Greece…
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2022Slowly replacing my lost collection of all my favourite records and cd’s. Originals were accidentally thrown out when moved and downsized. Hopefully will be able to get some replaced., 45’s were far too many over the years to replace. Start with best. T
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2015'Stars' (1991) is, deservedly, one of the Top 20 selling albums of all-time in the UK and spawned no fewer than 5 Top 40 singles ~ the classy title track, the lovely 'For Your Babies', the catchy 'Something Got Me Started', the classy 'Your Mirror' and the upbeat 'Thrill Me'. Of the other 5 tracks, 'Model', with its lilting reggae beat, and the sweet ballad 'How Could I Fall' qualify for special mention here. If you haven't heard this album, and you like smooth, well-delivered soul-influenced pop music, then this should fit the bill very nicely indeed.
