Madonna - Like A Prayer - CD
Amazon.co.uk
Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the 1980s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. It also unveiled the hit "Express Yourself", which ushered in the era of Madonna as a "stainless steel sexual icon". Musically, Prayer showcased her burgeoning songwriting prowess, with the beautiful "Oh Father" and the perky pop of "Cherish". Besides a throw-away collaboration with Prince ("This Is Not a Love Song"), the album stands as one of her strongest works, eschewing the strong dance beat influences from her past--she saved that for the remixes--and concentrating instead on melody and structure. Like a Prayer also gave a hint of things to come with the delightful "Dear Jessie" displaying a maternal side worthy of her name. --Steve Gdula

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2024Madge at her best, a must have.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2018This album does showcase a more mature Madonna. I feel that i might be alone in this but although she is talking about relationships and family which could get dark when relationships become strained or broken she still manages to bring a light to the subject and a a sense of hope.
The best songs on the album are co-produced with her and Patrick Leonard and sound beautifully mixed. The opening track Like A prayer points to the genius of a well produced pop song with a slight controversial message and it still packs a punch. My standout tracks on the album would have to be the wonderfully glee "Cherish" and "Oh Father" they are totally beautiful and out of the singer songwriters in the 80''s Madonna would skillfully match sound with visuals.
I was expecting some thin vinyl but it was very thick 180g and didn't jump at all the sound is not bass heavy but it is a quality pressing.
if i had to remove a mark it would be that the front cover slightly faded looking. I would recommend this vinyl pressing to any Madonna fan. Madonna album on vinyl will have to be True Blue

This is one of the best albums i have ever heard!!!!!
Madonna's best album of the 80's! undoubtedly the music is amazing,
described as 'THE CLOSEST POP MUSIC GETS TO ART'
its underrated in sales (15million) considering that :Like a virgin sold 21 million even though its a great album this is better.
I would say its just as good as MJ Bad so should have around 35-40 million sales
so all fans and non-fans out there go and buy this album. it will make your life just that much better and you'll improve this album and hopefully it will eventually get the sales it deserves!
also, CALLED ONE OF THE GREATEST FEMALE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME - in top 15
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 April 2022A true Madonna masterpiece. Classic tunes such as Like A Prayer and Express Yourself make this album worth listening to. I highly recommend this album to anyone with a keen interest in 80's pop.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2015I brought this to kick off my eighties Madonna collection and I was really impressed. Its one of the greatest pop albums ever made and one of Madonna's best efforts so far in her discography. A truly impressive album which saw Madonna prove to the critics she could evolve lyrically, musically and personally. The whole LP is brilliant but my personal favorites are obviously Like A Prayer,Express Yourself and the beautiful Spanish Eyes.
Fast delivery. The disc and inlay notes are in great condition. Jewel case was in brilliant condition too...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 August 2011This is where Madonna stopped being a pop idol and became an artist Like A Prayer is a bold artistic statement that took Madonna in a whole other direction its dark and brooding mixing rock r'n'b and a whole handful of genres creating a cohesive adult pop album in which she gets personal but also relates it to yourself from beginning to end its personal and uplifting and insanely good listening Like A Prayer is definitely one of her best and one of pops best.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2019Being a fan of Madonna's old music (Like a Prayer, Dear Jessie and such), I bought this album to play on my stereo, music is great and brings back memories of when I would listen to Like a Prayer quite often.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2012Well, it isn't any new that's LAP is one of the best albuns of her career. Some of the most important hits of all the time are here: Like a prayer, Express yourself and Cherish. One song I never cared about and becomes one of the favourites is Pray for Spanish eyes, a very cute ballad. In any case, more than recomended!

5.0 out of 5 stars MADONNA TAKES POP TO ANOTHER LEVEL
For many 'Like a Prayer' is considered the best work from the Queen of Pop herself, and rightfully so. This album reveals a maturity of expression in pop music that takes away the bitter perception of Pop music as being lame without substance. Madonna once again collaborated with her 'True Blue' (read my review on that album) team , Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray to create yet another masterpiece.
Like a Prayer: This probably is one of Madonna's most memorable songs of her career (next to Vogue), definetely her most powerful, not much credit was given to her for her vocal performance on this memoriable track that was a #1 throughout the world, even in Zimbabwe where I was staying at the time. Every body memorised the words. The song is brilliant I love the way it slowly builds up into an explosive ending with the choir, the video, even though played today would not have raised such a storm, was brilliant and cleverly thought out. Indeed a memoriable track by the Queen herself. 5/5
Express Yourself: A statement that is Madonna herself, a fearless, explosive track with a video to match, this is Madonna's first steps in ranting her views towards the right of expression, never to hold back who you trully are. A great track. 5/5
Love Song: Prince and Madonna what a collaboration, although the track is somewhat perculiar and different and heavily influence by the music of Prince who screams and yelps throughout the track. Its a good track if you looking for something different, quite experimental there is a break down in the song that says 'time goes by so slowly for those who wait', reminiscent of Madonna #1 'Hung Up' smash hit. An okay song but probably the weakest on the album. 3/5
Till Death Do Us Part: In my opinion this is her best track that was not released as a single or ever performed, Madonna does something she had never done and thats to reveal the abusive relationship she had with her then ex-hubby Sean Penn "the bruises they will fade away, what hurt so hard are the things you say, I will not stay to watch your hate as it grows, you're not inlove with someone else you don't even love yourself, yet still I wish you ask me not to go", now thats deep. Love the instrumentation, her vocals, a very mature piece of Pop. Absolutely love it. 5/5
Promise to Try: Yet another revealing track, this time around she sings solo backed by piano and violin, a story of a little girl trying to find understanding due to loss, in this case Madonna losing her mother Madonna to cancer when she was five. A touching beautifully sung song, which features in 'In Bed with Madonna' documentary as she visits her mothers grave. A true gem to this amazing album. 5/5
Cherish: Madonna brings the album back to cheerful hieghts with the beautiful track 'Cherish', a love song with a great pop melody and video, great backing vocals by Donna Delorey and Nikki Harris, this track makes you feel good inside. 5/5
Dear Jessie: Madonna reveals a more child like imagination in this gem, "Pink Elephants and lemonade, dear Jessie hear her laughing running through the love parade, candy kisses on a sunny day", very imaginatively written, a colourful song, sung beautiful by Madonna, another feel good track. 4/5
Oh Father: Madonna yet again reveals a personal side to her private life, her turbulent relationship with her father one of her deepest song on this album, very touching "Oh father you never wanted to be that way, you never wanted to hurt me, why am I running away" a powerful song with a choir and orcheraster to add on the fuel, Madonna sings hard on this track, another beauty. 4/5
Keep it together: Before ending the album she picks it up one more time with the grooviest track on the album, this track talks about her experience being in a large family, sharing all the hand me downs and having to be the clown in order to get attention. Nevertheless even then Madonna knew the importance of having a tight family unit. Great performance of this track on her "Blonde Ambition Tour Finale". Love this track. 4/5
Spanish Eyes: A dark, mysterious piece of work, heavily influenced by Spanish instrumentation, beautiful vocals and backing vocals, probably the most maturist song on the album "how many lives do they have to take, how much heartache, how many sons do they have to burn, spanish eyes, when will they ever learn", beautiful if I might say so myself.
Act of Contriction (closing Interlude): A rather wierd ending to the album, but fits in perfectly, Like a Prayer choral section is played backwards (which in those days was very controversial, some even saying satanic), but of course Madonna takes that away and puts a touch of humour on it. It seems she waiting to at the gate of heaven, but doesn't have a reservation, the album ends with her screeching, 'what do you mean I am not in the computer'(ha ha ha)only Madonna.
Listen if you are a Madonna fan you probably have this album, but if you love pop and are a child of the 90's get this album and hear what mature, entertaining Pop music is all about, forget about Britney, Hanna Montanna and all the other wannabes, Madonna is the sure deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars The songs of a passionate young girl
A must have for your collection. I love Madonna and this is a little beauty to have. I much prefer her early days that the present, although I do like her current style, the early days are the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un album piacevole e dal ritmo brillante
