About the Author
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. He later lived in London and married Constance Lloyd there in 1884. Wilde was a leader of the Aesthetic Movement. His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, was first published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. He published a revised and expanded edition in 1891 in response to negative reviews which criticised the book’s immorality. Wilde became famous through of the immense success of his plays such as Lady Windemere's Fan (1892), An Ideal Husband (1895) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).
In 1985, after a public scandal involving Wilde's relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, he was sentenced to two years' hard labour in Reading Gaol for 'gross indecency'. His poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol was based on his experiences in prison and was published in 1898. After his release, Wilde never lived in England again and died in Paris on 30 November 1900. He is buried in Père Lachaise cemetery.

About the author

Oscar Fingall O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford where, a disciple of Pater, he founded an aesthetic cult. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd, and his two sons were born in 1885 and 1886.
His novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and social comedies Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895), and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), established his reputation. In 1895, following his libel action against the Marquess of Queesberry, Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for homosexual conduct, as a result of which he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898), and his confessional letter De Profundis (1905). On his release from prison in 1897 he lived in obscurity in Europe, and died in Paris in 1900.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThere was once a man who became famous throughout the realm for his wit. He played with words, leavening them into the lightest of souffles such that they tripped off the tongue of the players, or wrought them dark and hard as people read of the corruption of innocence. He became a byword for world weary cynicism and any man might quail upon whom the writer turned his tongue.
Yet in his other works, this apostle of abandon and philosopher of despair told tales of the purest innocence, with not a hint of irony nor a soupcon of cynicism; tales of the purest, self-sacrificial goodness, tales to make the hardest man cry and the bitterest woman weep.
Which was the real man? Read them and weep, weep tears of a joy so sharp it hurts.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2013Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI have always loved the story of The Happy Prince as told by Danny Kate if memory serves me correctly. It is incredibly sad and even now I can weep over its sentimentality and high moral. I had never read the other tales before. They are all written in a romantic style that befits this author and are indeed quite charming. Sometimes though the ending is a little unexpected. You will have to read them all to see what I mean.
Most of the tales unfortunately are quite sad but Wilde`s humorous look at life bursts through in only the way he writes.
Buy or download the book, I am sure you will not regret it. The tales are like a breath of fresh air and remind me actually of Hans Christian Anderson or the Brothers Grimm and their romantic look at life.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2014The book I read was bought 2nd hand from a book shop.
This is one of those timeless classics that can be read by adults or too children.
I loved this book and I loved all the stories within it, but I couldn’t help noticing a recurring theme throughout.
There seems to be an extraordinary lack of faith in humans. Most of these tales contain hard and unfeeling characters that disregard the fragile feelings of others. Some are moral tales, the recurring moral being that life is tough and people are tougher. Sometimes the moral seems to be that ignorance is bliss.
Perhaps this is just my interpretation of it.
This book portrays the harsh reality of people, there is no fluffy story telling and some of the stories are downright heartbreaking.
The tale of the happy prince and The Nightingale and Rose are very poignant and leave you wanting to cry out,
“No! This cannot be!”
The stories themselves are beautifully written I would recommend that anyone should read these stories, young or old.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2013Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI really can not recommend this book enough. It is so wonderfully written and the lessons taught in each of the short stories are thought provoking and at times very moving.
The first story "The Happy Prince" is by far my favourite and is the type of wonderful literature that you so rarely see today.
I instantly bought Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Grey" which was equally as wonderful.
Buy The Happy Prince, read it for yourself or read it to your children so they may learn some wonderful language and excellent life lessons.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 July 2013Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI got this book as it was to be discussed at our book club. Oscar Wilde would probably not have been my choice of author, However, these short moral tales, not too dissimilar in content to what you might expect of the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen, were very easy and pleasant to read.As usual with Oscar Wilde, the language use is clear and economic. In the case of these stories, this helps make them entirely suitable for reading aloud to young children - who I think would enjoy them. Every member of our entirely adult book club also enjoyed the stories.

The Selfish Giant: 5*
The Devoted Friend: 2.5*
The Remarkable Rocket: 4*
On the whole, I loved these short stories by Oscar Wilde, as with everything I have read by him so far!
The previous short story I read by him, The Canterville Ghost, had a very different feel to these stories. These short stories read more like fairy tales and fables and I absolutely loved them.
I would definitely recommend reading this collection and I can't wait to read more of Oscar Wilde's work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and very moving fairy tales
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase“The Happy Prince and Other Tales” is a delightful book containing the very moving and thoughtful fairy tale of the Happy Prince and four other fairy tales. They are all great for children and adults. The title tale is about a prince who was very happy during his lifetime because he never left the castle or the nearby ground. He had no knowledge of the people in his land, the poor, the dying, those in pain. Now he was a statue covered in gold with precious stones for his eyes and in his sword. Now being in the city square, he could see the misery of his people. A sweet bird, a swallow, came one day and rested at the foot of the statue. It was surprised when it felt tears fall on it.
What happened next is a joy to read, the requests that the no longer happy prince made of the swallow, its several trips, the reactions of the city, and the reaction of God.
