- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2012From the Dawn of the Space Age (the 1950s, when I was a mere tow-headed lad of 6), I've loved Science Fiction. Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon were my heros. From the Age of Progressive Rock, Queen brought me something more than four chords and a danceable beat. For one brilliant moment in 1980, Dino de Laurentis combined the two disparate elements into a film experience simply named "Flash Gordon".
Sir, I thank you, and praise your work to this day!
This rollicking space opera features masterful and humorous performances by Sam Jones (Gordon), Chaim Topol (Zarkov), Brian Blessed (Voltan), and Timothy Dalton (Barin). Melody Anderson (Dale) and Ornella Mutti (Aura) make The Planet Mongo a place I would definately want to visit. Thank you one and all, for being part of this lineup. A special thanks must go to my all-time favorite villain Ming The Merciless, Ruler of The Universe, played with obvious relish by veteran actor Max von Sydow.
A fun and sexy script with lots of action, this film is as much a lampoon of super-hero sci-fi as it an homage to the genre.
But QUEEN DOING THE SOUNDTRACK!!?? I went off the rails when I saw and heard this film! Under the penmanship of the late, lamented Freddy Mercury and the artistic soul of Brian May, the soundtrack album is a serious listener's ear candy. It is expressive, moody, sensual and heroic as only a Flash Gordon movie can be.
The soundtrack features bits not heard in the edited film soundtrack, and each tidbit makes a good pair of headphones worth the expense.
So when you are sitting in your comfy chair, listening to your new Amazon download or CD, and your lady (or gent) asks why you are smiling and rocking out, just tell her/him "Queen's soundtrack for 'Flash Gordon'!", be prepared to hand over your headphones, or crank up the speakers.
With any luck, they'll want a piece of ear candy too!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2007This is one of those special cases where a movie and its soundtrack are perfectly matched. The film was a rainbow-splash of Retro Future and neo-Art Deco. Likewise, the soundtrack has whispers of the 1930's (comparable to "Xanadu"), but also affirms contemporary sensibilities. You get the Queen rock and metal that you expect, but also the subtler ambient-movements form the film, and sampled dialogue.
In reality, this disc is a mixture of soundtrack (one word), sound track (two words), and movie score, which blended diversity gives a better representation of the movie's audio component. To be sure, this is not your typical film tie-in. But considering the film, this oddness not only fits in, but enhances and complements the film.
I think my favorite tracks are the middle pieces--the ambient link-music. Queen is faced with a similar problem that John Williams had in doing "Star Wars": What does space sound like? If we visit another planet, what would we hear? Williams chose to follow Holst and Kubrick, and stuck with the traditional orchestra-pit combo, reinforcing the space opera with Wagnerian blasts. But Queen opted for something far more experimental.
Taking a cue from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet," they chose to go the electronic-synthesizer rout. Both approaches have their distinctive merits, but, in this case, Queen chose the better rout. Going electronic-synthesizer reinforced the film's setting--Ming's Warlord Palace, the forests of Arborea, the climatic air battle over Mongo, and its distinctive style--Retro Art Deco Future.
Since the union of audio and visuals was so seamless, I guess that is why I keep playing this soundtrack over and over again. Thank goodness for CDs and the repeat button. I would have worn out a vinyl LP years ago!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2016I am not at all a fan of Queen, but I have to give them props for having crafted one of the wackiest, most bonkers motion picture soundtracks ever committed to record.
Just like the 1980 film itself, the album is full of cheesy goodness, including snippets of dialogue and sound effects lifted directly from the movie. Brian Blessed’s exhilarating, maniacal intensity as Vultan, leader of the Hawk Men, is alone worth the price of purchase– for both the film and the soundtrack.
None of this insanity detracts from the music – in fact, it enhances it, and the music responds in kind. The lead vocals (on the iconic main theme and its reprise throughout), the screeching guitars, the crazy keyboards and synthesizers, the pulse-pounding drums, and the kinetic percussion all function simultaneously as both classic rock and classic kitsch – a rare feat.
I highly recommend the 1994 single CD version, which is the basic movie soundtrack; the 2011 double CD deluxe edition is really geared more toward die-hard devotees of Queen.
If you enjoy the movie, you’ll enjoy this soundtrack. If this is all new to you, but you just want to hear something totally weird and off the wall, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Theatrical Soundtrack
Queen’s Flash Gordon is a bold and adventurous soundtrack that perfectly complements the campy sci-fi epic. Packed with dramatic instrumentals and iconic tracks like Flash’s Theme, this album showcases Queen’s ability to push creative boundaries.
The blend of operatic rock and cinematic flair makes it stand out from their traditional studio albums. While it’s more of a niche listen, fans of the movie and Queen’s experimental side will appreciate its energy and theatricality. A must-have for collectors and those who love the fusion of music and film!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flash!!!! Savior of the Universe!!!!
Very fond memories of watching Flash Gordon in the theater when I was only 7, and not realizing that the music in the background was from Queen, who as I grew up, would come to love and cherish for a lifetime. A lot of people call this album their weakest, but I disagree. Remember, it's a soundtrack to a movie and to enjoy the full benefits of it, you have to sit back, relax, listen and just think about all the scenes from the movie which is what I usually do when I listen to it. The vinyl version was a must to complete my Queen catalog on vinyl.
